ABCU Credit Union Transition to Federal Status and Deposit Insurance Changes

ABCU Credit Union Ltd. members will vote on a special resolution to apply to become a federal credit union under the Bank Act and immediately amalgamate with Innovation Federal Credit Union. This change would affect deposit insurance coverage for ABCU members. Currently, deposits are insured by the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation (CUDGC) in Alberta. If ABCU becomes a federal credit union, it will join the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC), and CUDGC coverage will cease.

The notice provides information on the transition from CUDGC to CDIC insurance, including the continuation day when CDIC coverage begins. CUDGC currently insures the full amount of deposits, while CDIC insures eligible deposits up to $100,000 per category. During a transition period, pre-existing deposits will be insured by CDIC to the same extent as CUDGC coverage. After the transition, CDIC’s standard coverage will apply to all eligible deposits.

CDIC coverage differs from CUDGC in several ways, including coverage limits and exclusions for certain types of investments and instruments. Members are encouraged to review the changes and examples provided to understand the impact on their deposits. Additional information is available at ABCU branches and on their website. [Source]
